Fertiliser

It doesn’t matter what type of potting mix you use; it only takes a short time for your plant to use the nutrients in it. If your plant is growing well, you will need to use fertiliser each time you water, rather than giving larger doses occasionally. Use a water-soluble fertiliser and read the manufacturer’s instructions on the label before applying.

For continuous fertilising use no stronger than ¼ strength. Do not over fertilise, and always be sure that the potting mix is not too dry when fertilising. Higher nitrogen fertilisers are best for young plants, and when they are large enough to flower, use one that is higher in phosphorus and potassium. You can’t expect lots of flowers if you use high nitrogen fertiliser, as it promotes growth, not flowering. Slow growing or sickly-looking violets will not usually benefit from fertiliser and any addition will cause a build-up of salts, which may kill the plant.
